October 2016 The Riders Seat: A Message From The President

Sorry to see the days are shortening but hopefully there will still be some riding for the next few months.
At the time of writing, we recently heard some incredible news from the Bonneville Salt Flats. Paul Bilton-Smith smashed 2 land speed records on his 500cc motorcycle! Huge congratulations to Paul, his wonderful family and friends who made it all possible! What an incredible accomplishment that will be something to remember forever. Can you imagine what it must feel like to say that you broke a world land speed record, especially in this high tech day and age!

We’re hoping to share more details in an upcoming Newsletter. (Editors note: photos will be published next month.)
Several club members including Florin Mustata, Jeff Marsh, George Kraus and Steve Millard, participated in the recent Cretins 4th annual mods vs rockers ride. There were approximately 40 bikes and our guys were impressed by the handling and speeds of the scooter riders.

We had a quiet September club meeting followed by a trip over to the All British Field Meet at PIR (Portland International Raceway). George’s Norton was on display along with two other nice original Commandos and some lovely other bikes including Tom Ruttan’s beautiful Triumph GP Racer and his 66 Bonneville TT. Here is a link to a video containing some of the scenes from the event

Florin took a short break from riding around Oregon and is making good progress with this Model 99 Dominator. He got it to start and it sounds great.

Looking ahead to the club Fall rally on September 24, Paul and Judy Sherbo have very kindly offered to host a BBQ at their home for our members and their spouses. You should have received more details via email, but please contact Paul or me if you did not. Paul and Judy would also appreciate an RSVP for numbers. It should be a lot of fun to meet at the World of Speed and to combine our event with Paul’s friends from the Galaxies Northwest club (a chapter of the Ford Galaxie Club of America).
Sunday September 25th will be the DGR (Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride) ride. What started off in 2012 as a pretty low key series of events is turned into a global charity event to help raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer research and suicide prevention. There will be 2 rides; one from Forest Grove and the other setting off from See See’s Coffee in Portland. Please see the recent club email for more details.

Finally and always, please let us know if you have any ideas for Norton or other vintage motorcycle-related events that you think the guys will enjoy.

Happy riding!

Cheers
Mike, President
